How to Make Homemade Whipped Body Butter

May 27, 2023 by Elanor Bryant Leave a Comment

Simple to make and packed with nutrient dense oils, your skin is going to love this whipped body butter recipe!

As an alternative to lotion, this butter will help to nourish your skin cells and hydrate your skin, all while smelling great!

For this recipe, you will need…

1/4 cup of high quality extra virgin olive oil (I use Terra Delyssa brand olive oil)

1/4 cup of coconut oil (I use unrefined coconut oil from Mountain Rose herbs)

1/4 cup of cocoa butter (I use roasted cocoa butter from Mountain Rose herbs)

1/4 cup of shea butter (I use unrefined shea butter from Mountain Rose herbs)

3-4 tablespoons arrowroot powder

Large, heatproof glass measuring cup

Heatproof large mixing bowl (I use a stainless steel bowl)

Large pot (for making a double boiler with the heatproof bowl)

Silicone spatula

9 oz each amber glass jars with lids

Electric hand mixer

Let’s get started!

To start off this recipe, create the double boiler system by pouring two inches of water into the large pot, then set your heatproof bowl over the top of the pot.

Turn on the correct size of stove top burner to medium low heat, and place the double boiler system over the burner.

After the burner is turned on to medium low heat, start prepping your other ingredients.

Prepping the Oils and Butters

To the heatproof bowl on top of the double boiler, add the 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil, 1/4 cup of coconut oil, 1/4 cup of shea butter, and 1/4 cup of cocoa butter.

Heat and stir frequently until all oils and butters are melted and one combined mixture.

Remove pot from heat and carefully pour all contents into a large, heatproof glass measuring cup.

Next, add the 3-4 tablespoons of arrowroot powder and stir with a fork until well combined.

The mixture will seem lumpy at first, but just keep mixing and it will smooth out after 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Cooling the mixture

After adding all of the ingredients and mixing well, put the liquid measuring cup full of your mixture into the freezer to solidify.

Keep the body butter mixture in the freezer for 30-45 minutes, or until your finger can poke and leave an indent in the top of the mix.

See the picture below for a reference of what texture you’re looking for.

Whipping it up

The final step to this whipped body butter is, you guessed it, whipping it up.

Using a hand mixer, whip the chilled butter and oil mixture for 2-3 minutes, or until light and fluffy.

After whipping, you should reach the texture modeled in the picture below.

Transferring to jars

After the butter is fully whipped, transfer to a 9 oz amber glass jar with a silicone spatula, ensuring you get every bit of this precious body butter!

This recipe makes a heaping 9 oz glass jar, with a little extra. The perfect amount for sampling your creation!

How to Use and Store Whipped Homemade Body Butter

To use this body butter, dip your (clean and dry!!) fingers into the jar and scoop out desired amount. Apply liberally to cracked, dry or dehydrated skin whenever and wherever you need it.

Alternatively, you could use a spoon to scoop out your body butter before applying. Using a small spoon, instead of your fingers, is a good idea- as this will keep the chances of contamination low. If you must use your fingers, make sure they are clean AND dry.

Any extra moisture will cause mold, which has the ability to multiply quickly. If using a spoon, be sure to clean the spoon after every use.

Store this body butter in a cool, dark place, away from any UV light. Using an amber colored jar, the kind I use is linked above, will significantly reduce spoiling time.

(A quick note on amber jars- I prefer these to clear glass jars because they help preserve your product for longer. This is because they provide wonderful UV protection against cosmetics. UV rays will spoil products faster by oxidizing them within the jar. To avoid UV related spoiling, use amber jars.)

Lastly, I know it is tempting, but do not eat this whipped body butter. I promise it does not taste like frosting!

CONGRATS!

We made it!

How simple was this whipped body butter recipe?

You can make this as a lovely gift for occasions like Mother’s Day, holiday season and birthdays. People really love handmade, thoughtful gifts- just like this whipped body butter.

It can be easily customized to any scent preference, just add 5-10 drops of any high quality, food grade essential oil, like Young Living brand.

I hope you enjoy this whipped body butter recipe as much as I do!
